Special Teams Propel Raiders to Road Win

Brandon, MB - A long bus ride to Brandon didn't slow down the Prince Albert Raiders (20-1-0-0) on Saturday night.
Four Raiders had multi-point efforts as they skated to a 6-0 win over the Wheat Kings (10-5-3-3) at Westoba Place. Sergei Sapego dished out three assists, Sean Montgomery had a pair of power-play goals, and Noah Gregor and Brett Leason each had a goal and an assist.
The special teams played a big part in the victory. The Raiders went 3/8 with the man advantage and killed off all five penalties.
The Raiders opened the scoring midway through the period. Montgomery collected a rebound in the slot and his quick shot beat Jiri Patera at the 9:34 mark.
About six minutes later, the Raiders extended their lead. Using a five-on-three power play, Carson Miller wired a shot past Patera from between the faceoff circles for his team-leading fifth goal with the man advantage.
Despite being in the bus all day, the Raiders used five first-period power plays to take the lead and outshoot the Wheat Kings 20-6.
In the second, Brandon battled back using a pair of power plays of their own. However, Ian Scott continued his strong play in goal by stopping all eight shots faced in the period.
The Raiders busted the game open in the third period. At the 5:54 mark of the period, Cole Fonstad was sprung behind the Wheat Kings defence by Parker Kelly. The Montreal Canadiens draft pick slid the puck through Patera's five hole to snap his 13-game goalless drought.
Twenty seconds later, the Raiders made it 4-0. Leason scored from the slot to extend his point streak to 21 games.
The lead held until the final five minutes of the period. The Raiders tallied their 12th shorthanded goal of the year when Noah Gregor fought off a defender and beat Patera on a breakaway with 4:28 to play.
Less than three minutes later, Montgomery tallied his second power-play goal of the evening to round out the scoring at 6-0.
Scott was busier in the third period, but made all 12 stops to preserve the shutout. In total, the Toronto Maple Leafs draft pick stopped 26 shots for his fourth clean sheet of the year. At the other end, Patera made 40 saves in a losing effort.
With the win on Saturday, the Raiders pushed their winning streak to 13 games.
The Raiders return to the Art Hauser Centre on Tuesday night to take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes (9-6-2-2). It's the final Raiders home game until Saturday, December 8. Tickets are available at the Raider Office and at raiderhockey.com. Game time is 7 p.m.
