Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba - The captain took home three trophies Saturday night as the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings hosted their Annual Awards Night before over 5,400 fans at Westman Communications Group Place.
Not only was 20-year old Macoy Erkamps named winner of the Art Marshall Trophy that goes to the hockey club's Top Graduating Player, the Delta, B.C. native was awarded the McDonalds Frank King Most Community Minded Player Trophy as well as the Rob Stouffer Most Inspirational Memorial Trophy.
A 5-year WHL veteran, who was acquired from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in September 2014, Erkamps is currently sitting second in league scoring among defenceman with thirteen goals and 71 points in 72 games. In 341 career WHL games, the former Lethbridge Hurricane scored thirty goals and 188 points, while accumulating 334 minutes in penalties.
While Erkamps was busy accepting three trophies Saturday, three veterans - Jayce Hawryluk, Nolan Patrick and Ivan Provorov - were taking home two each.
A first round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Philadelphia Flyers, Provorov was named the Wheat Kings' Meighen Haddad LLP Most Valuable Player as well as the Brad McCrimmon Memorial Trophy, as Top Defenceman, for the second straight season.
Provorov finishes the season sitting atop the WHL scoring race among defenceman with 21 goals and 73 points.
The Russian blueliner was one of four Wheat Kings to average more than a point per game this season. Leading the way was Florida Panthers' second round draft pick Jayce Hawryluk. The 20-year old Roblin, Manitoba product captured the Brandon Sun Scoring Championship Trophy for finishing the year with 47 goals and 106 points in 58 games. As well, he was named this year's recipient of the Canad Inns Hardest Working Player Award.
A 17-year old Winnipeg product, who captured the WHL's Rookie of the Year honours in 2014-15, Patrick picked up the Manitoba Blue Cross 3 Stars' Trophy as well as the Manitoba Hydro Turk Broda Top Manitoba Born Player Trophy.
Patrick finished second in team scoring in this, his second season in the WHL, with 41 goals and 102 points in 72 games, becoming the first 17-year old Brandon player to reach the 100-point plateau since Ray Allison and Brian Propp in 1976-77.
Rounding out the list of winners this year were netminder Jordan Papirny (Shoppers Drug Mart Fans Choice), Tyler Coulter (Precision Toyota Unsung Hero), Ty Lewis (Dennis Truscott UCT Most Improved), Tanner Kaspick (Maggie Janz Scholastic Player), Tim McGauley (Keystone Centre Most Sportsmanlike) and Stelio Mattheos (MNP Rookie of the Year).
Mattheos was the first overall selection in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft in Calgary and finished his freshman season with thirteen goals and 30 points in fifty games.
This year's awards were given out during the club's final regular season game, which was won by the Wheat Kings - 3-0 over the visiting Regina Pats. Jayce Hawryluk scored all three times for the Wheat Kings, who received a 17-save performance from netminder Jordan Papirny. The shutout - his sixth of the season - not only tied the club's Single Season Record for Shutouts, it tied him with Tyler Plante for the club's all time lead with twelve.
For the second straight season the Wheat Kings captured the Eastern Conference regular season pennant with an impressive record of 48-18-4-2. Brandon will now open up their best of seven Conference Quarterfinal series this coming week against the winner of Tuesday's Tiebreaker between the Medicine Hat Tigers and Edmonton Oil Kings.
Games one and two will be played Thursday and Friday nights at Westman Place. Tickets to both games are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
