Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - Today the Calgary Hitmen handed out their player awards, honouring the team's best from the 2015-16 Western Hockey League regular season during a special pre-game on-ice ceremony at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Hitmen import Radel Fazleev received the prestigious Player of the Year award. The 20-year-old forward entered the last game of the regular season with career highs in goals (19) and assists (51), leading Calgary with 70 points in 58 games played. He was also a strong community ambassador, fronting a program called Faz's Friends, presented by MEG Energy, in support of Kids Cancer Care. Past recipients of this notable award include Adam Tambellini, Cody Sylvester, Karl Alzner and Ryan Getzlaf.
Jake Bean and Travis Sanheim were co-recipients of the Tommy Gun's Original Barbershop Top Defenceman Award. The tandem carried a combined 131 points into the regular season finale. Sanheim, who is ranked fourth among all WHL blueliners with 67 points, set a new single-season franchise record for the longest assist streak by a defenceman at 14 games from Nov. 27 - Feb. 5. The previous mark of eight was established by Matt Kinch during the 1999-00 campaign. Bean, the top-ranked WHL prospect (No. 13) available for the 2016 NHL Draft, as compiled by NHL Central Scouting Service, now holds the single-season franchise record for most goals by a defenceman (24). He passed the previous mark of 23 set by Paul Postma in 2008-09.
The pre-game ceremony also recognized 21 billet families and the three over-age graduating players in captain Colby Harmsworth, alternate captain Keegan Kanzig and forward Jackson Houck.
