Connecticut Whale News Release


The Whale (28-25-5-3, 64 pts.) defeated the Atlantic Division-leading Providence Bruins 4-2 Sunday in Providence to break an 0-2-0-1 streak, handing the Bruins only their second regulation loss in 13 games and moving into a seventh-place tie with Hershey in the Eastern Conference. Prior to that, Connecticut lost 4-3 in a shootout to Portland at home on Tuesday, were shut out 3-0 in Binghamton on Friday and lost 4-3 on the road to Adirondack on Saturday. Jason Missiaen made a personal AHL-high 37 saves in Sunday's win, and Brandon Segal was the Whale's top offensive producer during the busy week, with 2-3-5 and a +5 in the four games.

* Division leaders are seeded 1, 2, and 3 in Conference standings. Eight teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs: the three division winners will be seeded first through third in order of points, and the next five teams in order of points will be seeded fourth through eighth.

This week:

The Whale start a six-game homestand with a pair of home contests this weekend. The Manchester Monarchs visit the XL Center on Saturday night for a 7:00 PM game, and then the Springfield Falcons come to town on Sunday for a 3:00 start.

Saturday, March 16 vs. the Manchester Monarchs at the XL Center, 7:00 p.m.

* The Monarchs (28-24-3-4, 63 pts.) had a four-game winning streak snapped Sunday in a 5-4 shootout loss at home to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, but have at least a point in eight straight games (6-0-1-1) and are only one point behind the Whale in the Eastern Conference standings.

* The Whale have won the last three meetings between themselves and the Monarchs, after a 9-2 loss in the first encounter December 8 in Manchester, and have beaten the Monarchs in both of Manchester's previous visits to the XL Center, 4-1 on January 25 and 3-2 February 17.

* Martin Jones (18-19-4, 2.57 GAA, 91.7% save percentage, 4 SHO) has started 14 straight games in the Monarch net, going 7-5-1 in that span.
