West Virginia Walks off with Series Finale

CHARLESTON, WV - Jose Osuna capped a three-hit night by lining a walk-off single into right in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the West Virginia Power a 5-4 victory over the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night.

Charleston now has a record of 63-62 (24-34 in the second half) on the season. With the win, West Virginia takes two out of three in this series and they improve to 56-73 (33-26 in the second half).

The Power started their game-winning rally with a pair of lead-off singles against new pitcher John Brebbia (3-1). A bunt moved both runners up and an intentional walk loaded the bases, bringing up Osuna (3-4, RBI, 2 runs), whose base hit finished the game. Orlando Castro (4-6), who threw a scoreless top of the ninth, picked up the win.

The RiverDogs dented home plate with the game's first run in the second. Dante Bichette, Jr. and Casey Stevenson started the inning with singles and a pair of groundouts brought Bichette in to grab the early lead.

In the second, Osuna jump-started a rally for West Virginia with a two-out double. After a walk put two men on, consecutive RBI singles by Willy Garcia and Francisco Aponte gave the Power a 2-1 lead.

Starting pitchers Bryan Mitchell for Charleston and Zac Fuesser for West Virginia settled down after that and the score stayed at 2-1 until the sixth, when both offenses awoke and sent both starters packing.

Stevenson (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, run) provided the offense for the RiverDogs in their half of the inning when he drilled his fifth home run of the year, a three-run shot to right that put his team up by two. The Power immediately responded, though, as a single by Osuna, a triple by Taylor Lewis (1-2, RBI, 2 runs) and a sacrifice fly by Garcia quickly evened the score at 4-4. It stayed that way until the ninth.

The RiverDogs will now travel to Lexington for four games against the Legends. The first game is scheduled to start at 7:05 pm with RHP Brett Gerritse (4-5, 3.95 ERA) going for Charleston against RHP Jonas Dufek (6-3, 5.62 ERA).
