Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Rome Braves edged the Hickory Crawdads, 6-4, before 693 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Rome (37-20, 55-72) jumped ahead with a run in the top of the first inning against RHP Nick Martinez. 2B Ross Heffley singled his way on, and then DH William Beckwith struck with an RBI single up the middle to plate Heffley for the 1-0 lead.
Hickory (32-27, 68-60) responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the first inning against LHP Fabian Williamson. With one down, 2B Rougned Odor rocketed a solo home run over the right-field wall, evening the score at 1-1.
The 'Dads then charged in front with two runs in the bottom of the third. CF Jordan Akins and SS Nick Urbanus started the rally with back-to-back singles, putting runners at first and second. Two outs later, LF Trever Adams lined an RBI single into right-center field, scoring Akins from second base and advancing Urbanus to third. Urbanus then sprinted home on a Williamson wild pitch, adding to the 'Dads new lead of 3-1.
The Braves, though, pulled even right away with two tallies in the top of the fourth. 3B Kyle Kubitza worked a one-out walk, before racing all the way home on an RBI triple by 1B Brandon Drury. RF Chase Anselment then grounded out to second base, enabling Drury to dart home and tie the game, 3-3
Martinez finished his outing with a scoreless fifth frame, before RHP Paul Schwendel (L, 1-1) started his stint on the mound with a scoreless sixth. However, Rome struck in the top of the seventh with a two-out solo shot by SS Fernando De Los Santos, lifting the Braves ahead, 4-3.
Rome added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning. With two on and one away, Kubitza and Drury knocked consecutive RBI singles, stretching the lead to 6-3.
The Crawdads refused to go down quietly against RHP David Peterson (S, 8) in the bottom of the ninth. With one down, Akins belted a double to right field, swinging himself into scoring position. Urbanus followed with a line drive RBI single right past Peterson on the mound, plating Akins to bring the 'Dads within two. Peterson, though, responded by inducing a game-ending double play against DH Luis Sardinas, closing the 6-4 win for Rome.
