Legends Pitchers Fan 19, But Greensboro Wins in 11, 3-1

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Lexington pitchers recorded 19 strikeouts, including 10 by starter Mike Foltynewicz, but the Greensboro Grasshoppers went on to defeat the Lexington Legends 3-1 in 11 innings Tuesday night.

Foltynewicz allowed just one unearned run over six innings of work. He struck out the side in the third and sixth innings.

The Grasshoppers struck first with one run in the second inning. With one out, Ryan Rieger tripled to right-center field, and with two outs, he scored on a passed ball charged to Lexington catcher Jobduan Morales.

Lexington tied the game in the sixth. With two out, Ryan Kreke singled and scored when Zach Johnson followed with a double off the right field wall. It was Johnson's 106th run batted in of the season, which leads the South Atlantic League.

The game remained tied until the 11th. With one out, Aaron Senne hit a solo home run to right field off Lexington reliever Tommy Shirley. Matt Smith followed with a single, and he scored when Rieger doubled to center field, giving the Grasshoppers a 3-1 margin.

Gregory Nappo (3-4) pitched the ninth and 10th innings to earn the win. Nick Wittgren pitched around a walk in the bottom of the 11th to pick up his first save of the season.

Shirley (2-3) took the loss after allowing the two runs in the 11th inning.

Greensboro has won the first two games of the series, which concludes Wednesday night. First pitch at Whitaker Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
