Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: West Virginia beat Asheville 12-4 Monday night. The Tourists held a 3-0 lead after the first inning, but the Power rallied to tie after five, including a solo home run by Aaron Baker in the fourth. West Virginia took the lead on an Evan Chambers home run in the seventh and added to the tally with another run in the inning before plating six in the eighth. Brandon Holden earned his first win, while Mike Williams picked up his first save. With the win, the Power have clinched this series and are one win away from taking the season series.
BACK TO .500: With a win today, West Virginia can even its record out at .500 for the first time since April 17 (5-1 win over Asheville in Charleston). The Power have been one game under .500 seven previous times this year and are 1-6 when trying to achieve an even record. West Virginia has not had a winning mark at any point in 2010.
POWER ALL-STARS: West Virginia placed four players on the 2010 South Atlantic League's Northern Division All-Star team. Ramon Cabrera, Aaron Baker, David Rubinstein, and Nathan Baker were selected by the managers, staff, fans, and media to compete in the mid-season classic, to be played at Fluor Field in Greenville, South Carolina on June 22. Aaron Baker will start at designated hitter for the North, which will be managed by Hickory's Bill Richardson. Hagerstown, Hickory, and Kannapolis each placed five representatives on the squad.
RUBINSTEIN ROLLS ON: Power outfielder David Rubinstein extended his current hitting streak to 11 straight dating back to May 27 in Sunday's doubleheader. The right fielder is batting .381 during this 11-game stretch, and has surpassed the previous season-best eight game runs by several West Virginia players this season. Rubinstein's current streak is the longest active such streak in the league, and is tied for the fifth longest game-wise run this season.
SLAM BAM CUNNINGHAM: Jarek Cunningham hit West Virginia's first grand slam of the 2010 season in the Power's Saturday night win. The Power had hit 33 home runs prior to the slam, including 21 solo home runs, nine two-run shots, and three three-run jimmy jacks. The 2009 edition of the Power hit 71 home runs, including three grand slams.
AT ASHEVILLE: West Virginia trails the all-time series with the Tourists 21-22 heading into today's series finale, including an 10-10 record at McCormick Field since 2005.
DRAFT UPDATE: The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Jameson Taillon with the second selection of the first round on Monday night. Taillon (pronounced Tie-own) was drafted out of The Woodland High School in Texas.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia pitchers have not walked any batters in the last 17 innings... Mike Williams save on Monday was the first of his professional career... The Power are 22-20 since Gary Green moved Evan Chambers to the top of the order. The outfielder has a .419 on-base percentage since moving to the top of the lineup... Jarek Cunningham's grand slam Saturday marked the first time this season that a Power player drove in more than three runs in a game, which had happened nine different times.
