Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns (30-30) fell after a three-run eighth by the Delmarva Shorebirds (25-34), losing 4-3 in Salisbury on Tuesday night.

The Suns got on the scoreboard first in the second on a base running play. With runners on the corners, J.P. Ramirez got caught in a rundown from first to second. During the play, Jeff Kobernus broke from third and scored before the tag for a 1-0 lead.

Next inning, Hagerstown struck again with an RBI double by Jeff Kobernus off Luis Noel down the left field line, scoring Sandy Leon from second to put the Suns up by two.

Mitchell Clegg held the Shorebirds scoreless until the sixth inning. Two batters after Gary Helmick reached on an error, Brian Conley tripled into right center with two outs to bring in a run and cut the Suns lead to one.

The Suns struck back in the next half inning, getting back the two-run lead. With Sandy Leon on first, Justino Cuevas singled to right. Helmick made a throwing error after the relay, allowing Leon to score for a 3-1 Hagerstown lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Delmarva rallied against Suns reliever Wanel Vasquez (2-4). Ty Kelly led off with a double, followed by an RBI single by Conley to half the Suns lead. The next batter, Kieron Pope hit a two-run home run to left to give Delmarva the 4-3 lead, which they held for the win.

Clegg does not get a decision, but pitched seven innings allowing only one unearned run, striking out five. Vasquez gets the blown save and the loss, allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Shane Erb got the final out in the eighth, not allowing a base runner.

Noel does not get a decision after pitching seven innings, allowing three runs, two earned, and striking out five. Nick Haughian (4-1) gets the win after pitching a scoreless eighth, and Josh Dowdy got the save after pitching the ninth without a run.

The Suns will have the next day off and will return home for the final homestand of the second half, a three-game set against the Charleston RiverDogs. First game is on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Gates to Municipal Stadium open at 6:00 p.m.
