Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Greensboro Grasshoppers scored three runs in the top of the 10th, aided by a close call at third and a two-run Jiwan James error, to beat the BlueClaws 6-3 Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Park.
Hickory also lost, so Lakewood (34-26) stays one game back of first in the South Atlantic League North.
With one out in the 10th, Michael Pasek singled, stole second, and scored on a Rand Smith base hit to third that was ruled fair at the bag. BlueClaws Manager Mark Parent was ejected arguing the call, but the Grasshoppers (28-33) took a 4-3 lead either way.
Greensboro added to the lead on a routine fly ball to centerfield that Jiwan James dropped, allowing two more runs to score to make it 6-3.
The Grasshoppers jumped on Lakewood starter Brody Colvin early, scoring two runs on a Rand Smith double in the top of the first.
Colvin settled down after that inning, giving up just three runs (all unearned) on six hits in 7 innings. He struck out eight and walked only one.
Lakewood got one run back in the third. James singled with two outs, stole second, and came home on a Jonathan Villar base hit to cut the deficit in half.
The score stayed at 2-1 until the seventh. Villar walked with two outs, and took second base for his 23rd steal of the season. Leandro Castro then doubled him in to tie the game at two.
Greensboro took back the lead in the eighth, with Jose Duarte scoring on a wild pitch from reliever Jordan Ellis (2-2), but the BlueClaws battled back to tie once again in the bottom half of the inning after Anthony Hewitt doubled and came home on a Domingo Santana sacrifice fly.
Ellis allowed three runs in his 3 innings, but only one was earned.
Sandy Rosario and Alejandro Ramos (2-4) both blew saves for Greensboro, but Ramos was able to shut the Claws down in the bottom of the tenth after giving up a lead-off single to Jonathan Singleton.
The BlueClaws have Wednesday off as they travel to West Virginia for a three-game series with the Power. Getting the start on Thursday at 7:05 pm for Lakewood will be RHP Colby Shreve (3-3, 4.43).
