Legends Win 12-4, Take Three of Four in Hickory

The Lexington Legends didn't put a man on base until the fifth inning, but went to work after that, finishing with 12 runs and 13 hits in a 12-4 win over the Hickory Crawdads Tuesday in Hickory. The Legends took three out of four in the series against Hickory, which is in first place in the South Atlantic League Northern Division.

The Crawdads took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and third innings. Hickory starter Matt Thompson retired the first 12 Legends batters before J.D. Martinez led off the fifth with a double.

Lexington tied the game in the sixth on a two-run homer by Jose Altuve. The Legends added another run in the sixth to take the lead, then scored four runs in the seventh inning and five in a ninth-inning rally that featured consecutive doubles by Jiovanni Mier, Jake Goebbert and Martinez. Martinez was two for five for the game, raising his South Atlantic League-leading batting average to .370. Kody Hinze drove in a run with a base hit in the ninth, increasing his RBI total to 57, which also leads the league. Goebbert was two for five with three RBI.

Lexington starter Juan Minaya (1-7) worked the first five innings to get his first victory of the season. Thompson (4-4) took the loss.

The Legends return home to open a three-game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds Thursday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
