West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - For the second day in a row, West Michigan nearly gave up a multi-run lead in the top of the ninth, but held on Thursday for a 6-5 victory over Dayton.
The win is the third in a row for the Whitecaps. Brent Dlugach gave West Michigan the lead for good, 3-2 with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth.
The Whitecaps added three runs in the eighth on a Jeff Frazier sacrifice fly, followed by back-to-back two-out hits from Matt Parrish and Jody Roughton, which each drove in a run.
With a 6-2 lead going into the ninth, Kevin Ardoin was brought in to finish the game on the mound for West Michigan. However, the Dragons scored three times and left the tying run at third. Cody Strait singled home the first run just before Phil Gentry tripled to drive in two and reach third as the tying run with two out.
A solo home run from Chris Kroski put Dayton on top in the second, but Frazier doubled and stole home to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. The Dragons took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on a throwing error by Dlugach, the shortstop.
Dallas Trahern pitched the first six innings for West Michigan and earned the victory. He held the Dragons to two runs (1 ER) on four hits. Lavon Lewis pitched two shutout innings before Ardoin started the ninth.
Looking to Sweep: The Whitecaps have won a season-high seven consecutive home games and can sweep their second straight home series with a win over Dayton on Friday. RHP James Morrison (0-1, 4.41) will be on the mound for the Dragons against Whitecaps RHP Jair Jurrjens (6-4, 3.20). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Eikenhout Incorporated Pre Game Show begins at 6:50 p.m. on 1340 AM WBBL and at mlive.com.
