Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (July 14, 2005) - Kenard Springer had two singles, stole two bases, and scored two runs including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth to help the Burlington Bees (10-11, 44-47) to a 5-4 win over the Peoria Chiefs tonight at Community Field. The Chiefs overcame an early 3-0 deficit to tie the game in top of the eighth on a Ryan Harvey home run, but Springer scored from third on a groundout by Geraldo Valentin in the eighth for the win. The win evens this three-game series at a game apiece.
The Bees jumped on Chiefs' starter Matt Weber in the first. Irving Falu and Valentin singled and both scored as Damaso Espino lined a double down the left field line. After two outs, Ed Lucas reached on an infield single that moved Espino to third, and Eddie Solis lined a base hit to left to drive him in with the Bees' third run.
Bees' starter Patrick Green held the Chiefs to no runs on three hits through five innings before Peoria got on the board in the top of the sixth. Sam Fuld led off with a double to left, moved to third on a groundout by Eric Patterson, and scored on a groundout by Harvey. The Bees answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Springer reached on an infield single to extend his hitting streak to ten games. Springer stole second and scored as Cody Cure shot a double down the right field line. The hit extended the Bees lead to 4-1.
In the top of the seventh, Jonathan Douillard singled to right and Bo Flowers pinch-ran for him at first. Drew Larsen lined a double past a diving Springer in left, and Flowers scored all the way from first. Larsen went to third and scored on a pair of groundouts and the Chiefs were within one at 4-3.
Green gave way to Adam Rowe in the top of the eighth. Rowe retired the first two batters before giving up the solo homer to Harvey. It was Harvey's 14th homer of the year, tying him for second in the Midwest League. The Bees came right back in the bottom of the eighth against Mike Jones, who replaced Weber in the seventh. Springer lined a single to center and moved to second on an infield hit by Cure. Cure finished with a career-high three hits in the game.
Falu popped up a bunt attempt to third baseman Aaron Smith in foul territory for the first out and Tim Layden replaced Jones on the mound. With Valentin at the plate, Springer and Cure pulled off a double steal to get to second and third. With the infield pulled in, Valentin hit a chopper over the mound that shortstop Anthony Granato dove to catch, but with Springer breaking on contact his only play was to first as Kenard crossed the plate with the go-ahead run.
In the top of the ninth, Yovany Damico set down the Chiefs in order for his second save. Rowe (4-4) was charged with a blown save, but got the win. Jones (0-1) suffered the loss for the Chiefs.
The Bees and Chiefs will wrap up this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Justin Sherman (1-3, 2.27) will start in place of Patrick Hicklen for the Bees. RH Grant Johnson (1-3, 4.71), the Cubs top pick (2nd round) in the 2004 draft, will start for the Chiefs. Friday Fest returns to Community Field tomorrow starting at 4:30. The band Yellow Submarine will be performing from 4:30-6:30. Fans that come between 4:30 and 6:00 for Friday Fest don't need a ticket to stay for the game.
