Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
July 14, 2005 - The Clinton Lumber Kings pounded out 13 hits and won for the second straight night as the Kernels dropped their fifth straight game overall by a 6-2 margin on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Sean Rodriguez drove in the first Cedar Rapids run of the game when he singled home Warner Madrigal with two outs. Nate Sutton advanced to third on the well hit ball to left, but the next batter up struck out. The Kernels managed only one other score late in the game as they pieced together three base hits from Sutton, Rodriguez, and Michael Collins.
Clinton struck for one run in the second on a double by Ian Gac and again for one in the fourth on a single by Gac before putting four runs on the board in the eighth inning. Tug Hulett led off the inning with a single to left and moved to second when Collins let a ball get through his legs behind the plate. Brandon Boggs then rapped a single to center that scored Hulett. No Kernels covered second on the play and Boggs alertly advanced.
Mitch Arnold relieved starter Karl Gelinas at that point but things didn't get any better for the Kernels. After a ground out moved Boggs to third he was nailed at the plate when Sutton fielded a grounder off the bat of Craig Hurba and pegged a strike to Collins at the dish. Hurba would eventually wind his way around the base paths to score after moving to second on an infield single by Billy Susdorf. Arnold uncorked a wild pitch which allowed both runners to move up one base and both scored when Andrew Wishy stroked a triple to right.
Gelinas turned in a strong outing for the Kernels, lasting 7 innings and allowing 10 hits but only four runs while striking out four. He took the loss, dropping his season mark to 5-6.
Boggs was 4-for-4 at the plate for the Lumber Kings and three other Clinton players had two hits each. Three Kernels collected multiple hits with Sutton, Rodriguez, and Freddy Sandoval reaching twice. Sandoval was 2-for-3.
The two teams close out a three-game series on Friday night with a 7 p.m. contest. Ronnie Ray makes his first start of the season for the Kernels after being inserted into the rotation this week. The Kernels will wear special camouflage uniforms in honor of the Armed Forces and the jerseys will be sold via silent auction during the game. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and doors will open at 6 p.m.
