Gateway Grizzlies News Release

MARION, IL-Jareck West became the first player in Gateway Grizzlies history to hit for the cycle Saturday night. West finished the night 5-6 with a grand slam and four RBIs to lead the Grizzlies to an 18-8 win the opener of a three-game series at Rent One Park.

The night began with a one hour 35-minute rain delay before the first pitch.

Gateway (27-36) has now won two straight. Saturday night's win snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Grizzlies at Rent One Park. The Grizzlies scored 18 runs on 21 hits. Both totals are season-highs. The Grizzlies have won the last two games between the two teams, by a combined scored of 35-11.

West wasted little time in starting the historic night. With two outs in the fist he launched his fifth homer of the year to put the Grizzlies on top 4-0. West doubled, singled and doubled again in his next three at-bats. In the eighth West lined out to second, in what appeared to be his final at-bat. He was the sixth player to come to bat in the ninth. He lined the triple to the left-center field gap for the historic feat. He is only the fourth player in franchise history to finish a game with five hits.

All but one player to come to the plate Saturday for the Grizzlies managed a hit. Every single player scored at least a run. Brandon Johnson and Joe Agreste each had three hits nights for the Grizzlies. Both players also drove in two runs. Brandon Peters, Chad Rothford and Joseph Scaperotta each had two RBIs as well. Rothford and Scaperotta each added a two-run home run in the game.

The Miners (33-30) got as close as a single run, scoring three times in the second inning against Grizzlies' starter Christian Castorri. Castorri (1-1) picked up the win despite pitching only five innings. He allowed six runs, two earned, on four hits. He struck out five.

The Grizzlies and Miners will play the second game in the series Sunday evening. First pitch is set for 5:05 pm.
