Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Avon, OH - The Kalamazoo Kings started off strong and then held off a late charge by the Crushers to capture game one of their three game series by the final of 6-5. The Crushers now fall to four and a half games in back of the Kings for first place in the Frontier League's East Division.
The Kings jumped out to a 6-1 lead on Crushers starter Jorge Charry as Kalamazoo posted runs in three of the first four innings. Josh Short had a pair of RBI hits while Joe Ramos hit a two-run single to help the Kings to their five-run advantage. Charry lasted just three and a third innings, giving up six runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Crushers offense was held in check early on as Carson Bryant allowed one run in the first five innings. Eddie Tisdale hit an RBI single in the second to bring home Gordon Gronkowski. Lake Erie picked up some momentum in the sixth inning as Tyler Johnson scored on a throwing error by Kalamazoo catcher Jett Ruiz. Tisdale added an RBI groundout to score Arden McWilliams and bring the Crushers to within three. Andrew Davis came through with an RBI single in the seventh to bring the deficit down to two.
Lake Erie got superb relief pitching from Cristobal Mata and Josh Faiola as the pair combined to throw five and two-thirds scoreless innings. That allowed the Crushers to come into the bottom of the ninth with a chance. Drew Saylor came through with an RBI single to pull the Crushers to within a run at 6-5, but Kalamazoo closer Tommy Mejia got the final two outs to earn his 13th save of the season. Bryant picked up the win for the Kings, while Charry took the defeat for the Crushers.
The Crushers are now 35-28 on the season and have dropped three straight. "This was an important game and is an important series for us," said Lake Erie Manager John Massarelli. "We need to find a way to try to win these next two games." The Crushers will continue their series with the Kings on Sunday evening at 5:05 P.M. Paul Fagan will start for Lake Erie against Bernard Robert.
