Washington Wild Things News Release

Ypsilanti, Mich.-The Washington Wild Things (32-32), presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, fell to the Midwest Sliders (29-33) 5-2 on Saturday night. Despite keeping the score close for most of the game, the Wild Things were unable to overcome two home runs and strong pitching from the Sliders.

The Wild Things took the early lead in the first inning when Jacob Dempsey drove in Chris Sidick with a two-out single. The Sliders tied the game with a leadoff home run by Jimmy Baker in the second inning, and then took the lead in the third. Jonnie Knoble scored from second after an infield single by Zachary Pace and an errant throw by Brett Grandstrand to Ernie Banks at first.

Washington pulled even in the fourth inning, as Grandstrand scored on Josh Blackstock's first hit as a Wild Thing. But Midwest would take the lead again in the sixth with another leadoff home run, this time by Pace.

Midwest starter Mike Penn then took control. Already pitching a strong game, he threw five consecutive stikeouts in the sixth and seventh to prevent a Washington comeback.

After the Wild Things failed to score with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, the Sliders added two assurance runs in the bottom of the inning. Washington relievers Michael Lucas and Rob Hedrick walked four consecutive batters to allow the first run, and a Joash Brodin single drove in the final run of the game.

Penn received the win for the Sliders, allowing two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts in 7.1 innings. Arshwin Asjes earned the save. Brian McCullough took the loss for Washington, pitching six innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits.

The Wild Things and Sliders play the second game of a three-game series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Pre-game coverage starts at 1:55 p.m. on WJPA 95.3 FM.
