
Beach Bums Take Opener From Florence

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums started August off on the right foot, toppling the Florence Freedom 7-4 in the opener of a three-game set at Wuerfel Park on Breast Cancer Awareness Night. The team wore special pink jerseys during the game.
Traverse City opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Stafford doubled down the leftfield line with one out. He scored when John Alonso blooped a single into left. Florence tied the game in the third inning. Matt Stiffler doubled to lead off the inning and Brad Hough followed with a single to bring him in.
The Beach Bums retook the lead when Andrew Barbaro walked and stole second with two outs in the fourth. He scored when Anthony D'Alfonso singled up the middle. Florence took its lone lead of the game in the sixth inning against Beach Bums starter David Nathanson. With two outs Erold Andrus doubled home Ryan Basham and Justin Pickett followed with a triple.
The lead was short lived as Traverse City plated two more in the bottom of the inning to take control. John Alonso and Andrew Barbaro singled to begin the frame and moved up on a wild pitch. Anthony D'Alfonso singled up the middle to drive in both runners. Mike Epping added an RBI double in the seventh inning while John Alonso drove in his second run of the contest in the same frame to make it a 6-3 lead. After a Florence run in the top of the eighth, Brian Lapin hit his second homer of the season to cap the scoring.
David Nathanson worked into the eighth inning to record his fourth win of the season. Nathanson did not walk a batter and struck out seven, winning his third straight start at home. David Hurst worked a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his third save in as many chances.
John Alonso had three hits, scored a run, and drove in a pair as the Beach Bums totaled 10 in the contest. Andrew Stafford, and Anthony D'Alfonso added two hits each. D'Alfonso drove in three.
The Beach Bums will continue the series with the Freedom tomorrow night with a 5:05pm Family Night contest. It is Grandparents Night at Wuerfel Park. RHP Jason Kiley (4-7, 4.54) takes the ball for the Beach Bums while Florence counters with RHP Andy Clark (3-4, 4.76).
