July 19, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, S.C. - If the house is a rockin', do come a knockin'! The Greenville Drive is making sure West End Field is the place to be during the team's eight-game home stand from July 21st-28th, which features two national entertainment acts, a tribute to Spartanburg's businesses and baseball heritage, and a spirited celebration of the great Boston Red Sox - New York Yankees rivalry.
The fun begins with a four-game series against the Savannah Sand Gnats on Saturday, July 21st with the beloved ZOOperstars returning to West End Field for the second consecutive season. With their cast of zany baseball legends like Cow Ripken Jr., Roger Clamens and Shark McGwire, the ZOOperstars' on-field comedy acts provide zany entertainment fun for fans of all ages.
Sunday's game will feature the always popular "Kids Run the Bases" at the conclusion of the game, plus "Reggy the Purple Party Dude" entertainment act. Reggy appeared at West End Field earlier this season and delighted fans with his fur-flying antics and kid-friendly interaction. As always, Sunday is Family FunDay, and will include plenty of pre-game activities on the concourse as well, courtesy of Mad Science.
"The ZOOperstars! and Reggy are both highly acclaimed national acts," said Drive General Manager Mike deMaine. "We are pleased to again be able to bring great entertainment like these to our fans at West End Field."
The night that no fan should miss is Monday, July 23rd. As part of the Upstate Community Night series, presented by Community Journals, the Drive will pay tribute to the City of Spartanburg's rich business and baseball heritage. To commemorate the town's rich baseball history, the Drive will wear Spartanburg Peaches uniforms and a 1950s-era jersey featuring the City of Spartanburg logo on the right sleeve.
During this historic game, a silent auction will be held and fans will be able to bid for the one-of-a-kind Peaches jerseys worn by each of the Drive's players and coaches. Bidding will start at $100 per jersey and proceeds from the auction will go to benefit the Friends' of Duncan Park efforts to save the stadium, home of Spartanburg baseball for more than 80 years.
"This jersey auction will allow fans take home a unique piece of Drive and Spartanburg baseball history, while helping to restore one of America's oldest ballparks," commented deMaine.
The second half of the home stand runs from Wednesday, July 25th through Saturday, July 28th and features the only meeting of the 2007 season with the Drive's cross-state rival Charleston RiverDogs, affiliate of the New York Yankees.
"Although we are almost 1,000 miles away from Boston the Upstate has tons of loyal Red Sox fans who enjoy seeing the Yankees lose, at any level!" stated deMaine. "Our goal is to make the atmosphere very uncomfortable for the RiverDogs. Fans are encouraged to join in the fun by wearing their Red Sox gear and to let their loyalties and enthusiasm be known throughout the contest."
Martial Arts Night highlights Wednesday's first game of the series, featuring Ho-Am Tiger Rock Tae Kwon Do performing pre-game and in-game demonstrations, which will include board breaking.
Then, on Friday, Wally the Green Monster will make a special trip down from his usual home of Fenway Park to help heckle the RiverDogs. As the mascot of the Boston Red Sox, Wally has seen his share of ups and downs in the most storied rivalry in Major League Baseball, and he'll be doing his part to make sure the Drive take care of business.
Closing out the Drive's eight-game home stand on Saturday, July 28th, the Drive will celebrate the Red Sox - Yankees legendary rivalry with highlights from great moments in their contest for supremacy over the years. Whether your favorite flashback is the Red Sox historic comeback during the ALCS in 2004, Pedro tossing Zimmer to the ground, Schilling's bloody sock, or "The Slap," the Drive will highlight each of these and more in the series finale with the Evil Empire's minor league affiliate.
"The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry has a rich and storied past and we are pleased to be apart of it," added Drive Co-Owner and President Craig Brown. "Red Sox Nation spreads throughout the country and that is evident in the loyal Drive fans located in the Upstate."
