Charleston RiverDogs News Release

The first place Charleston RiverDogs sent 10 batters to the plate in each the third and fourth innings scoring four runs each time, and three pitchers scattered six hits in whitewashing the Kannapolis Intimidators, 10-0, in South Atlantic League action Thursday night in front of 4,642 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, the SAL Southern Division leader Charleston has won 11 of its last 12 games including six in a row to improve to 18-9 in the season's second half (55-42 overall). Nine of Charleston's ten runs in the contest scored with two outs in the inning.

With its third consecutive loss and fifth in its last six outings, Kannapolis falls to 12-16 and 44-54.

The win marked the RiverDogs' eighth shutout this season, third most in the SAL, and the third for the team in the season's second half. Charleston has allowed only three total runs and 15 total hits in the first three games of the series, all victories.

The RiverDogs snapped a scoreless tie by sending 10 batters to the dish in the third inning against Kannapolis starter Justin Edwards, scoring four two-out runs on only two hits. With two outs and Kevin Smith on first, Mitch Hilligoss lined a single to start the big rally leaving runners on 1st and 2nd base.

Eduardo Nunez's RBI single up the middle accounted for one run, and two batters later with the bases loaded another scored when shortstop Sergio Miranda's throw to first base on Josue Calzado's grounder pulled the first baseman off the bag. The error scored an unearned run, handing the RiverDogs a 2-0 lead.

The next batter Kyle Anson drew a bases-loaded walk from Edwards (6-8) to score the third run, and the fourth tally came when Edwards then drilled Chase Odenreider with the bags full.

In the fourth during which Charleston collected four hits, Chris Kunda tripled and scored on Hilligoss's sacrifice fly to right field to make the score 5-0. Then again with two outs, the RiverDogs proceeded to load the bases with a walk and a pair of infield singles before Kyle Anson doubled down the left field line to clear the bases and increase Charleston's lead to 8-0.

The RiverDogs scored two more two-out runs in the fifth on Calzado's two-RBI triple down the left field line against reliever Steve Spurgeon.

Charleston starter Ivan Nova (5-4) pitched five complete innings and scattered three hits while striking out three. He won for the first time since June 8. Paul Patterson pitched the six and seventh frames and allowed only one hit, while Ferdin Tejeda pitched the final two innings to complete the shutout.

Anson paced Charleston's attack with four runs batted in while Hilligoss, Nunez and Calzado each collected a pair of hits.

Kannapolis was led offensively by Brandon Allen who had two of the Intimidators' six knocks.

The finale of this four-game series is scheduled for Friday at 7:05 pm with the RiverDogs pitching southpaw Mike Dunn (11-3, 3.06 ERA) while Kannapolis goes with northpaw Jake Rasner (5-8, 6.44 ERA).
