Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Charleston, SC - For the third straight, the Kannapolis Intimidators could not total more than six hits. For the third straight night, the Intimidators were befuddled by the Charleston RiverDogs pitching, losing 10-0 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. It was the sixth straight time the Intimidators (12-16, 44-54) have lost to the RiverDogs (18-9, 55-42) this season.
Kannapolis is 4-22 when it has six or less hits in a game.
The Intimidators first scoring change came in the third inning. Stefan Gartrell and Mike Grace led off with back-to-back singles and John Anderson sacrificed them both into scoring position. Sergio Miranda and Archie Gilbert proceeded to ground out to end the inning. Kannapolis mustered just two more singles up until the ninth inning when Gilbert and Brandon Allen each singled, but were left on base when the game ended. Kannapolis finished with six hits, all singles, and zero runs. In the series, Kannapolis has three runs on 15 hits and the Intimidators have now scored just five runs in the last six games against the RiverDogs.
Through two innings, Kannapolis starter Justin Edwards looked sharp. He faced the minimum and he picked off the only baserunner he allowed.
Then came the third inning. Charleston sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring four runs on two hits and a Miranda fielding error. Three of the runs were unearned. Then, in the fourth inning, there was more of the same. Ten more batters came to the plate and four more runs scored. But, this time, all the runs were earned. Edwards was chased from the game with two outs in the fourth. Even though Charleston scored eight runs on six hits in the two innings, it could have been worse?the RiverDogs stranded six runners in the two frames.
Things settled down after that as Steve Spurgeon came in and logged 3.1 innings in mop-up duty, allowing two runs. Jason Rice walked a batter and gave up a single in a scoreless eighth inning.
Edwards (6-8) lost for the sixth time in his last eight starts. Ivan Nova (5-4) got the win for Charleston, giving up just three hits in five shutout innings.
The final game of the series and of the 10-day road trip is Friday in Charleston. Game time is set for 7:05 pm.
