Weglarz Named Player of the Week Again
June 29, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OH - Aeros left fielder Nick Weglarz was honored as Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending June 28th, earning his second weekly award of the season. The 21-year-old native of Canada was just named to the World Team for the prestigious XM All-Star Futures Game, and previously won the award for the week ending May 17th.
Weglarz batted .450 (9-20) this week with six walks, two doubles, five runs scored and league-leading totals of four home runs and 12 RBI. He did the bulk of his damage in the series against Trenton at the beginning of the week, going 7-10 with eight RBI while homering in all three contests. Weglarz notched his first four-hit game of the season Wednesday night before tying a franchise record with four walks Thursday, becoming just the 12th player to accomplish that feat.
After admittedly trying to do too much at the plate in the beginning of the season, the 6'3", 255-lb. slugger has been leading Akron offensively. The 2008 Olympian for Canada started the year mired in a 3-48 slump at the plate and only registered five hits in the entire month of April, but since then has led the Aeros in nearly every statistical category. Since May 1st he is now batting .319 with 14 doubles, 11 home runs and 49 RBI along with a .627 slugging percentage in just 51 contests.
Weglarz also extended his team-high 23-game on-base streak with the walk in the fourth inning of Sunday's game against Binghamton. During this incredible stretch, which is the second longest for any player in the Eastern League this season, he is batting .324 (23-71) with 21 RBI and 19 walks against only 15 strikeouts. He also ranks 10th in the Eastern League with a .395 on-base percentage.
For the season, the former third-round draft pick of the Indians from Lakeshore Catholic High School (ON) in 2006 now is batting .261 with 14 doubles and 46 walks in 70 games played. He is tied for fifth in the EL with 12 home runs, is fourth with 46 runs scored, and his 55 RBI rank second in both the league and the Indians system. He leads Akron with 14 multi-RBI games on the year, and has recorded a six-game hitting streak on three separate occasions.
The Aeros and Binghamton conclude their four-game series on Dollar Dog Monday tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park. Fans can buy all hot dogs for just $1 a piece throughout the night, with a limit of four hot dogs per trip to the concession stands. Former Pitcher of the Week Jeanmar Gomez (6-2, 3.06 ERA) takes the mound against Dylan Owen (0-5, 6.83 ERA), as Akron aims aim for a seventh consecutive series victory. The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
