Weekend Preview | Steelheads Prepare for Three Game Stretch
March 7, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Brampton Steelheads News Release
MISSISSAUGA, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads will return to action for three games in the next five days. The team will see the seventh place Hamilton Bulldogs (27-31-3-2) come to the Pond on Friday night before consecutive games away to the Erie Otters (25-32-3-1) on Saturday and at home on Tuesday night. The team will be looking to rebound from a 3-0 shutout loss in Ottawa to close out last weekend.
Despite the disappointing end to the weekend, the Steelheads may have already clinched a playoff a spot by the next time they step on the ice, a Barrie loss to North Bay on Thursday night would ensure the Trout of playoff games for the fourth consecutive season. Instrumental in the Trout's 6-3 win over the Barrie Colts on Friday night, Liam Ham has gone on quite the scoring run as of late, posting six points in his last five games, one more point this season will mark a new career high for the defenceman. Friday and Tuesday's game will be special ones for the Steelheads, the team's first ever Bleed Blue night will be followed up by New-School Night on Tuesday, both games are spectacles that fans won't want to miss.
Friday, March 8th vs Hamilton Bulldogs (Paramount Fine Foods Centre)
Puck Drop @ 7:00PM
The OHL's defending Champions currently sit in 7th place in the OHL's Eastern Conference, five points clear of the ninth-place Barrie Colts following a 5-3 win over the Kitchener Rangers on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs are led by 2019-draft eligible forward Arthur Kaliyev, the newly minted 50-goal scorer has recorded 98 points on the year and currently sits in sixth place on the OHL scoring leaderboard. The leader on the Bulldogs blue-line is another piece that returns from last years title-winning squad, Kade Landry of Gowanston, ON has compiled 51 points in 62 games this season. The last meeting between the two clubs ended in a 6-5 SO loss for the Trout, a frustrating night in Hamilton that saw the team surrender a pair of two goal-leads. The game will be the final meeting of the season between the two clubs, the Bulldogs currently hold a 4-1 lead in the season series.
Saturday, March 9th @ Erie Otters (Erie Insurance Centre) & Tuesday, March 12th vs Erie Otters (Paramount Fine Foods Centre)
Puck Drop @ 7:00PM
Two games against the Erie Otters will follow, a late-season home and home, that came about as a result of a weather-caused postponement of Thursday, January 31st's contest. The Otters currently sit two points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference but have two games in hand on the Windsor Spitfires who currently reside in eighth place. The Otters' scoring is provided by two key pieces in Gera Poddubnyi and Chad Yetman, both players have recorded 54 points on the year. Poddubnyi is the triggerman having scored 26 goals thus far, a career-high for the Russian-born centreman. The game will be the first meeting between the two teams this season, and a rematch of the 2016-17 OHL Finals that saw the Otters win four games to one.
Opposing Players to Watch:
Hamilton Bulldogs
Matthew Strome: Philadelphia Flyers fourth-round selection Matthew Strome is the captain of the Hamilton Bulldogs and currently sits second on the team in scoring. Strome comes from a family of OHLers, older brothers Ryan and Dylan both played in the league before progressing on to NHL careers. Matthew became the second Strome to win an OHL Champion last season joining his brother Dylan, who won with the Erie Otters in 2016-17 by defeating the Steelheads in the OHL Finals. Playing with the Bulldogs at the Memorial Cup last season Strome recorded two assists in four games.
Erie Otters
Jamie Drysdale: The OHL's leading scorer amongst rookie defenceman, Drysdale has been making an impression in his first season in the OHL. Seven goals and 30 assists have the Toronto, ON just three points away from breaking the 40-point barrier. By doing so Drysdale would join an exclusive group that includes NHL draft picks Mikhail Sergachev (MTL 1st 2016) Cam Dineen (AZ 3rd 2016), Ryan Merkley (SJ 1st 2018) and Rasmus Sandin (TOR 1st 2018) to break that mark since the 2010-2011 season.
Chad Yetman: Another player for the Steelheads to be aware of on Saturday and Tuesday is Chad Yetman, the Whitby, ON native has recorded eight points in his past four games. The hot streak has pulled him even with Gera Poddubnyi at the top of the Otters scoring charts this season. A former 10th-round selection in the 2016 OHL Priority Selection Yetmans path to the OHL had stopped in both Midget AAA with the Clarington Toros and Whitby Wildcats and Junior A with the OJHL's Cobourg Cougars. In three career games against the Steelheads, Yetman has recorded one assist.
