Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Nashua, NH -- Righty Matt Weagle turned in the fifth consecutive strong starting pitching performance for Worcester, as the Tornadoes scored five early runs and made them stand up, defeating the Nashua Pride, 5-2, at Historic Holman Stadium on Tuesday night.

Much as they have been all season, the Tornadoes bats were at work early. Scott Grimes drew a leadoff walk off Nashua starter, righthander Bucky Kosyk (0-1), and moved to second base on a bunt single by B.J. Weed. Chris Colabello then hit a grounder to third that Jack Joffrion booted and then made an errant throw. Grimes scored but Weed was thrown out at the plate, with Colabello advancing to third base. He would score on and RBI groundout to second base by Alex Trezza, putting Worcester up 2-0. The Tornadoes picked up another run in the 2nd inning on a two-out RBI single to right by Jeff LaHair, plating Chuck Jeroloman who had tripled. Worcester added two more in the 3rd, when Weed tripled to right-center leading off the inning, then scored on Chris Colabello's first home run of the season, a shot to left-center that made it 5-0 in favor of the Tornadoes. That would be more than enough for Weagle (2-0) who allowed just an infield single through the first four innings, before allowing single runs in the 5th and 6th. Lefty Tom Cochran pitched the final three frames, surrendering just a single and a walk while striking out three.

Weagle (2-0) matched his Win total for the entire 2007 season with the victory and Kosyk (0-1) took the Loss. Cochran was credited with his 2nd Save in as many appearances. The Tornadoes bullpen has not allowed an earned run in 15.1 consecutive innings pitched. Weed went 3-4 and fell just the home run shy of the cycle. Can-AM League Batter of the Week Francisco Caraballo and Jeroloman both extended their season-long hitting streaks to 5 games. The Tornadoes will look to sweep the short series in Nashua from the Pride when they wrap up the first road trip of the season on Wednesday night. Righthander Shaun McNamara will make the start for Worcester and he will be opposed by Nashua righty Hideki Nagasaka. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
