Balanced attack pushes Surf to fourth straight win
May 27, 2008 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Atlantic City Surf News Release
Atlantic City, N.J. - Atlantic City starter Brian Rodaway shut down the Ottawa Rapidz' offense, while eight different Surf players had hits en route to a 5-1 victory in a Can-Am League game on Tuesday night at Bernie Robbins Stadium. It was the fourth consecutive victory for Atlantic City (4-2).
Ottawa (1-5) scored its only run of the game in the first inning when LF Jereme Milons drove home 1B Jabe Bergeron with a two-out double. Rodaway (1-0), the league's win leader in 2007, shut down the Rapidz over the next six innings, allowing four more hits and striking out five for his first victory of the season.
Atlantic City's bats got going in the third, with 1B Joe Burke's RBI single. The Surf then added two more in the sixth on LF Clyde Williams' RBI triple and 3B Billy Hogan's RBI double. Burke added another RBI single in the seventh to make it a 4-1 game, before CF Lucas Taylor's eighth-inning double plated DH Eddie Kim for the final run of the game.
A pleasant surprise for the Surf was C Michael Santoro, signed earlier in the day to replace C William Plaza, who went on the disabled list with an injured wrist. The native of Manalapan, N.J., and a former Villanova U. player, went 2-for-4 in his professional debut. He was one of four Surf players with two hits on the evening, along with Burke, Kim and Taylor.
Bergeron was the only Ottawa player with more than one hit. Mike Kusiewicz (0-2) suffered the loss for the Rapidz; the Montreal native gave up four runs on nine hits in seven innings of work, striking out two.
The Surf will gun for the series sweep on Wednesday, with J.C. Huguet (0-0) facing Ottawa's Adam Hawes (1-0) at an 11:05 a.m. start time.
