Atlantic City Surf News Release
Atlantic City, N.J. - Atlantic City Surf righthanded pitcher/coach J.C. Huguet announced his retirement from playing on Saturday. The starter went 9-7 with a 4.84 ERA in 24 appearances, 21 of them starts, for Atlantic City during the 2008 season. He finished third in the league with three shutouts, fourth with 106 strikeouts and fourth with 134 innings pitched.
Huguet also spent the 2007 season as a pitcher/coach with the Surf, and went 9-5 with a 4.23 ERA. He had played the previous three seasons in independent baseball, in the Northern, American Association and Northeast Leagues. The native of Cuba was converted to a pitcher in 2004, when he played for the Bangor Lumberjacks of the Northeast (now Can-Am) League; there, he was second in the league with a 2.00 ERA in 32 appearances, most in relief.
Previously, Huguet had been a catcher and first baseman in the Cincinnati Reds' organization. The Reds signed him as a non-drafted free agent during the 2000 season.
"While he has decided to no longer play, we're truly grateful for and proud of what J.C. has accomplished with the Surf over the last two seasons," said Surf president Chris Carminucci, also Huguet's field manager during the 2007 season. "We wish him well in his future endeavors, whatever they may be."
