Five Surf Players Traded In End-Of-Season Deals

Atlantic City, N.J. - The Atlantic City Surf of the Can-Am League announced that the club traded pitchers Adam Cox and Charlie Ruud to the St. Paul Saints of the American Association to complete an earlier trade, while SS Anthony Granato and OF Joe Burke were sent to the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League in exchange for future considerations. In addition, reliever Tony Pierce has been shipped to the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League.

Cox and Ruud go to St. Paul to complete the trade in which Ruud and Pierce were sent to Atlantic City on August 22. Cox was one of the top pitchers in the Can-Am League in 2008, going 7-3 with a 2.62 ERA and striking out 112 hitters, second in the league, in 99.2 innings pitched. Ruud appeared in three games for the Surf, going 1-1 with a 6.11 ERA.

Granato had a superb season for Atlantic City in 2008, and was named the league's all-star shortstop. He finished the season with a .322 average, 62 RBI and a team-high 14 home runs. He was also in the league's top five in most offensive categories, including stolen bases (31 - 2nd), runs scored (83 - 2nd) doubles (28 - tie-3rd), triples (4 - tie-4th), on-base percentage (.429 - 4th), and extra-base hits (46 - tie-3rd). Burke led the Surf in hitting with a .324 average, seventh-best in the league, to go along with 50 RBI and five home runs. He appeared in 92 of the club's 94 games.

Pierce made four appearances in relief for the Surf in 2008, going 0-0 with an 8.31 ERA. He also pitched in nine games for Atlantic City in 2006.

The Atlantic League's regular season continues through September 21. Somerset has already clinched a playoff berth, while Long Island is currently in first place in the second half in the Liberty Division.
