Moreno Propels Skyhawks To Game One Victory

AUGUSTA, N.J. - Jorge Moreno singled to left in the bottom of the tenth, scoring Ron Perodin from second, to give the Sussex Skyhawks a 3-2 victory over Quebec in the first game of the Can-Am League Championship Series.

Perodin led off the bottom of the tenth with a double down the left field line. Kevin Rios was then intentionally walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. Moreno lined a pitch through the left side of the infield, and Perodin's slide beat the throw home to score the winning run.

Matt Petrusek picked up the win in relief after throwing a scoreless tenth for Sussex. Mark James was saddled with the loss for Quebec.

Sussex starter Kyle Ruwe gave up two runs (one earned) on nine hits over 7.1 innings. Ruwe walked one and struck out two in a no-decision. Quebec's Michel Simard gave up just two runs (one earned) on three hits over 7.2 innings, while walked five and striking out five, but did not factor into the decision.

Goefrey Tomlinson put Quebec on the board in the third inning when he drove in Josh Colafemina with a single to right to give Les Capitales a 1-0 lead. Patrick Deschenes blasted a solo home run down the right field line in the top of the sixth to give Quebec a 2-0 lead.

Sussex got some offense going in the bottom of the sixth when Ron Perodin led off by reaching on an error. With two outs, Matt Weston drove Perodin in from third to cut the Capitales lead to 2-1.

Sussex tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Jorge Moreno stroked a two out single through the left side of the infield, scoring Ron Perodin from second.

Quebec and Sussex return to action at Skylands Park on Thursday night at 7:05 for Game 2 of the best-of-five Championship Series. The teams will travel to Quebec on Friday to play Game 3. Games 4 and 5 will be on Saturday and Sunday in Quebec, if necessary.
