Washington Wild Things News Release

Crestwood, IL-Depth of the lineup is key to winning close ballgames, especially in the midst of a team's quest for their first playoff appearance since 2007. The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, benefited from just that Tuesday as Pat Kregeloh, Ryan Kresky and Cole Martin, the seven, eight and nine hitters in the lineup, went 7-12 with four runs scored in the Wild Things 7-5 victory over the Windy City Thunderbolts at Standard Bank Stadium.

A leadoff hit by pitch to Washington centerfielder Scott Kalamar spelled trouble right away for Windy City starter Hein Robb in the top of the first as Kalamar later came around to score on a RBI double by first baseman William Beckwith giving the Wild Things an early 1-0 lead. Another hit by pitch in the top of the fifth allowed Carter Bell to connect on a 1-1 pitch and deliver a clutch two-out RBI double bringing Cole Martin and Beckwith around to score, 3-0.

Windy City responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth as an RBI double by centerfielder Andrew Brauer scored Thunderbolts shortstop Garrett Carey, 3-1. But, in the next inning, Washington broke the game open and quickly answered with three runs of their own, two off the bat of rookie Cole Martin. With left fielder Maxx Garrett on third, a slipped ball that scooted just underneath the Windy City's catcher's glove allowed Garrett to slide in and make the score 4-1. Cole earned his first two professional RBI's for Washington as he hit an RBI double to right field bringing home Kregeloh and Kresky for a comfortable 6-1 advantage.

Martin, who had a career day for Washington at the dish going 3-4, was also responsible for the Wild Things last run of the evening in the eighth as he drove in Kregeloh for the second straight time with an RBI single to left, 7-1. Down but not out, the Thunderbolts struck for three runs in the bottom of the eighth and one in the ninth to cut the first-place Wild Things deficit to 7-5, however, Wild Things closer Jonathan Kountis held on for the save in the team's crucial 47th win of the season.

Zac Fuesser picked up the win for Washington as he allowed just one run on eight hits and struck out five over 6 2/3 innings of work.
