Joliet Slammers News Release
The Joliet Slammers-Presented by ATI Physical Therapy- lost 7-4 on Monday to the Southern Illinois Miners.
The game started after a 57 minute rain delay and was the pitchers dual early on as many expected. The Southern Illinois Miners starter was Rick Teasley who threw a 7-inning no-hitter against Joliet earlier in the season. Travis Bradshaw was the Slammers starter. The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the 4th inning when Adam Giacalone singled in a run to give Joliet a 1-0 lead. It was Giacalone's 14th RBI in his last 11 games. It was also the first run Teasley allowed vs. Joliet in almost 17 innings against them this season. Bradshaw took himself out of the ballgame that same inning with what was described as a cramped finger in his pitching hand. Sam Moore came on in relief and gave up 3 runs in the 5th to give the Miners a 3-1 lead. The big hit of the frame was a 2-run single from Aaron Gates. Kevin McNorton came on in relief before that inning was over. He could not stop the scoring as he allowed a sacrifice fly to Chris Burke, an RBI single to Steve Marino and then a run-scoring single to Jon Eisen to make it 6-1. It became 6-2 in the bottom of the 5th on a Adam Lewis RBI single for Joliet. The Slammers got closer in the bottom of the 6th thanks to a 2-run homer from Matt Weaver. It became 7-4 in the top of the the 7th when a run scored on a Jordan Wellander wild pitch. Joliet then left the bases loaded in the bottom the 8th and they stranded eleven men on the day. The contest was delayed a few minutes in the 8th as a cat ran onto the outfield to add to the many memorable events of the night that also included a huge rainbow after the earlier rains. The Slammers raised over 2500 dollars for the Wounded Warriors Project as they auctioned off the players' camouflage jerseys on this Military Monday.
In the middle of the 8th inning, the Slammers gave away $500 to lucky fan,Jim Gress, as part of their Amazing August promotion. Each home game in August will see one fan go home with at least $250 dollars. The higher that night's attendance, the higher the payout will be. The payout on Friday, August 1st to a lucky winner was $5000.
The home-stand continues as the Lake Erie Crushers come in to Joliet for a Two-Dollar Tuesday at 7:05pm. All reserved seats will be just 2-bucks with 2-dollar hot dogs as well!
