River City Rascals News Release

It was a night to forget for River City on Monday. They were positively shut down in an 11-0 thumping at the hands of the Evansville Otters, particularly the right hand of starter Connor Little.

Little, a relative unknown, pitched eight innings of four-hit, scoreless ball to secure the series for the Evansville Otters. The righty out of the University of Hawaii at Manoa racked up eight strikeouts while keeping the Rascals from reaching second base until his final inning of work.

It was a different story for Tim Koons, who took the mound for the Rascals. The Otters tagged him for a run in the first and then broke through twice in the third, with Josh Allen and John Schultz scoring after leading off with base hits.

Koons would surrender another in the fourth, but hold the Otters scoreless in the fifth. He returned for the sixth but would not record an out, instead giving up a single to Jeremy Nowak and a two-run opposite field homerun to the right-handed swinging Chris Sweeney. That would make it 6-0 and spell the end of the night for Koons.

Meanwhile, Little kept cruising. He faced just four men in each the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings and then faced the minimum in the seventh. The lone Rascal who managed to have any real success against him was Jon Myers, who singled three times against the righty. The only other Raskie with a hit off the Otter starter was Brian Hansen, who managed a base hit off him to start the eighth.

Evansville really broke the game open in the seventh. Facing Ethan Bader, they managed four hits and five runs to make it 11-0. Houck picked up an RBI in the inning, as did Nowak, J.R. Higley and Jaime Del Valle, who drove in two with a pop single to right center to drive in Nowak and Higley. Del Valle, like Little, was making his first start of the season for the Otters.

In six games this season, the Rascals and Otters scored a total of 91 runs between them, and in every contest, at least one team scored ten runs. Unfortunately, it was the Otters breaking into double digits and administering the thumping Monday night. With the loss, the Rascals dropped to 45-30 overall on the season. Koons took the L, while Little got the W. They now return home to open a three-game set with the Frontier Greys. First pitch in their August 12 matchup will be thrown by Tommy Mendoza at 7:05 pm.
