Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (August 11, 2014) - The Southern Illinois Miners used a six-run fifth inning to come back from a 1-0 deficit and eventually win 7-4 over the Joliet Slammers, clinching their fourth-straight series win on the road to start their nine-game road trip and pull into a first-place tie with Evansville and Washington at the top of the Frontier League's East division.
The game started out after a 57-minute weather delay as a pitcher's duel between Rick Teasley (9-2) and former Miner Travis Bradshaw (2-2), with both teams getting baserunners against the other's starter until the fourth inning, when Bradshaw had to leave with a hand injury after throwing a pitch to Jay Austin. Joliet then took the lead on a two-out RBI single by Adam Giacalone in the bottom of the frame.
Against reliever Sam Moore, the Miners would explode for their big rally in the fifth, as they loaded the bases with nobody out before Frank Martinez worked a walk to tie the game at 1-1. Aaron Gates continued his torrid series by lining a two-run single over Giacalone's glove at first to give the Miners the lead at 3-1, a lead they would not surrender.
Against new pitcher Kevin McNorton, Chris Burke then hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1, and RBI singles by Steve Marino and Jon Eisen later in the inning made it 6-1, with Southern Illinois batting around and sending 11 men to the plate in the frame.
Joliet would come back with three runs in the next two innings but the Miners got an insurance run on a wild pitch in the seventh after Matt Jones doubled and went to third on a groundout. Derrick Miramontes came on and worked a scoreless ninth for his 17th save. Gates ended up leading the offense with a 3-for-5 game with two more RBIs and a double, giving him six for the three-game series.
The Miners will now continue their road trip with a three-game series beginning on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. against Rockford. Miguel Ramirez will pitch for the Miners against the Aviators' Tony Butler.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception. They also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season. For ticket information, please contact the Rent One Park box office at 618-998-8499.
