NORMAL, Ill. - The Gateway Grizzlies and Normal CornBelters split their doubleheader Tuesday at the Corn Crib.

Gateway defeated Normal 9-7 in an extra inning game one before falling 8-4 in game two.

The Grizzlies (45-31) never trailed in game one and picked up the win behind a 4-for-5 game from Ben Waldrip.

Gateway took an early 4-0 lead after a two-run first and a two-run second inning. Waldrip brought in two runs on a single in the first while TJ Bennett and Michael Wing both brought in a run in the second.

Normal (36-39) came within a run after a three run fourth inning, but Gateway tacked on two runs in the fifth on a Waldrip two-run home run to take a 6-3 lead.

The CornBelters pushed across three runs in the sixth inning to help send the scheduled seven-inning game to extra innings.

The game stayed tied 6-6 until the ninth inning when Waldrip hit a two-out RBI double and Richard Seigel followed with a two-run home run.

Luke Westphal (3-3) collected the win after three scoreless innings of relief and Richard Barrett notched his 17th save of the season, tying his previous single-season high (2012).

Kale Kiser, playing in his first game since July 18, went 3-for-5 with a double and a run.

Gateway scored the first two runs of the game in game two. Kiser brought in a run on a double and Landon Hernandez picked up an RBI single.

Normal scored in each of the first three innings to take a 5-2 lead.

Waldrip tripled in the sixth and came in to score on a Josh Adams RBI groundout to make the score 5-3, but Normal extended their lead with a three-run sixth inning.

The Grizzlies and CornBelters continue their series Wednesday night. Left-hander Kerry Kelley will make the start for the Grizzlies at 7:00.
