Washington Wild Things News Release

WASHINGTON, PA - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, showed their resilience yet again, to improve to 5-1 for the first time since 2007.

The Wild Things were able to overcome missed opportunities and key baserunning miscues to earn the 4-3 win, and the series sweep.

Washington stranded 10 runners, five of them coming in the sixth and seventh innings. All would be forgotten when Jonathan Johnson flew out to center fielder Mitch Dening to seal the win.

Gateway's Landon Hernandez started off the scoring in the second by doubling to left-center field, plating Jerod Yakubik. It was the first time the Wild Things have given up the first run in a game in 2012.

Yakubik would make it 2-0 in the following frame, with a double to center field scoring Jonathan Johnson.

Gateway struck again in the sixth, Yakubik, after a one out single advanced to third on a single by Landon Hernandez to right-center. DeJesus followed with a double to left-center to score Yakubik from third.

Shain Stoner cut the Wild Things' deficit to two in sixth with a leadoff home run to left center. Stoner has been hot in the series against Gateway, going 4-for-13, with seven RBI's and a grand slam.

Washington had more opportunities in the sixth after loading the bases with one out, but Paul Tremlin replaced Cale Johnson and struck out the next two batters to end the inning.

No opportunity, however; would appear to be as golden as what the Wild Things had in the seventh.

Down two runs in the seventh, the Wild Things loaded the bases with three consecutive walks to start the inning, highlighted by Shain Stoner battling back from down 0-2 to work a walk to load the bases in an 11 pitch at bat. Michael More then scored pinch runner Matt McConnell on a sacrifice fly to left to make it 3-2.

The seventh walk of the game from the Gateway pitching staff loaded the bases again, this time to pinch hitter Luis Rivera, but Doug Thennis grounded into an inning ending double play.

Still, the Wild Things weren't done.

Loading the bases again in the eighth with one out, Michael Bando grounded to third. What looked to be a sure out at home turned out to be a gift for the Wild Things. Instead of touching home for the force, catcher Landon Hernandez opted to apply a tag to James Simmons. The ball kicked away allowing the go-ahead run to score

Wild Things, 4, Grizzlies 3.

Nathan Striz came on in the ninth to earn the save, striking out Antone DeJesus and Jon Myers and getting Johnson to fly out to end the game.

Ross Gusky earned the win for Washington while Logan Mahon took the loss for Gateway.

The Wild Things homestand continues Friday night as they host River City. Tickets are available and can be purchased by visiting www.washingtonwildthings.com, the CONSOL Energy Park box office or by calling 1-866-WILD.
