Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL) - The Joliet Slammers finally broke their four-game losing streak at Silver Cross Field on Thursday night in a 4-1 win over the Traverse City Beach Bums in the final game of the series.

Steven Maxwell threw a scoreless seven-inning gem in his second start for the Slammers, while striking out 10 Beach Bums, tying the team record for strike outs in a game, set last season by Kevin Crimmel.

Joliet jumped out early when Abel Nieves reached base on an error, and with two outs in the inning, Hector Pellot slapped a double into the outfield to bring Nieves around.

With the 1-0 lead, the Slammers picked up insurance in the third when Nieves singled to bring around Trevor Willis, who had reached third on an overthrown pickoff by Bums' pitcher Bennett Whitmore.

Joliet took the two-run lead into the fifth where they picked up another pair of runs. Erik Lis put a ground ball into play, allowing Ben Hewett to score from third. Two batters later, Kyle Manus slugged an RBI double to make it 4-0.

It would stay that way until the ninth inning when the Beach Bums scored their only run of the night: Jeff Flagg, who hit the go-ahead homer in Wednesday's contest, drove a runner in on a ground-out.

Joliet opens up another home series on Friday with the Evansville Otters. Fans can catch the action live on AM 1340 WJOL, and streaming live online at www.wjol.com, with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
