Gateway Grizzlies News Release

WASHINGTON, PA - The Washington Wild Things came back from a three-run deficit and held on for a 4-3 victory over the Gateway Grizzlies Thursday night at Consol Energy Park. The win for the Wild Things gave them a series sweep of the Grizzlies.

Gateway (2-4) wasted no time taking an early 2-0 lead after three innings. Landon Hernandez collected an RBI double in the second inning and Jerod Yakubik picked up an RBI double in the third inning to make it 2-0 Grizzlies.

The scored that way until the sixth inning when Antone DeJesus belted an RBI double to give the Grizzlies a 3-0 advantage.

After that, the Wild Things started clawing away at the Grizzlies lead. Shain Stoner ripped a solo homer off Grizzlies starter Cale Johnson to make it 3-1 in the sixth. Johnson went 5 1/3 innings, giving up just one run on five hits. He struck out three, walked three and got a no-decision.

Washington (5-1) picked up a sacrifice fly in the seventh to make it 3-2. A fielder's choice RBI and an error helped Washington tack on two in the eighth to give them a 4-3 lead. Nathan Striz closed out the game in the ninth to secure the win for Washington.

Yakubik and Hernandez both went 2-for-4 with an RBI double for Gateway.

The Grizzlies resume their road trip with game one of a three-series against the London Rippers on Friday night in Canada. First pitch is set for 7:00 EST.
