Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (1-5) vs. TRAVERSE CITY BEACH BUMS (4-1)

Thursday, May 24 - 7:05 p.m. CT

Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #7 - Home Game #3 (1-5), (0-2)

RHP #4 Steven Maxwell (0-1, 8.31 ERA) vs. LHP #29 Bennett Whitmore (0-0, 1.59 ERA)

Last time out.

The Slammers scored six runs in the fourth inning to go up by a score of 6-0. But the Traverse City Beach Bums rallied and eventually tied the game at six on a Matt Howard solo home run in the eighth inning. Joliet took the lead back in the bottom half of the frame but closer Amalio Diaz could not hold on to the 7-6 edge. Back-to-back home runs from Chase Burch and Jeff Flagg in the ninth gave the Beach Bums their first lead of the game and they'd hold on from there to win 8-7. Four of the eight runs the Slammers gave up were unearned. The Beach Bums hit four home runs in the contest. Offensively the Slammers were paced by Ben Hewett (2-4, RBI, BB), Erik Lis (2-5, R), Kyle Maunus (2-5, R, RBI), David Fox (2-5, 2-R, RBI), and Trevor Willis (3-4, R, RBI). Slammers pitching struck out 10 Beach Bums and starter Tommy Mendoza K'd six by himself. Diaz (0-1) took the loss.

For Starters.

RHP Steven Maxwell made his professional debut last Saturday against the Gateway Grizzlies. After a solid first three innings, he struggled in the fourth and fifth innings, giving up a total of seven runs, four of which were earned in four and a third frames. He walked three and allowed six hits. Maxwell put up outstanding numbers at Division One powerhouse Texas Christian University and got drafted twice, once by the Minnesota Twins, and once by the Chicago Cubs. Maxwell's junior season at TCU saw him tally an 11-2 record with a 2.70 ERA. Maxwell tossed 103.1 innings that season and struck out 93 batters while only walking 34 in 18 starts. He was a 2010 2nd-team Louisville Slugger all-American, the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, a 2010 1st-team All-Mountain West Conference selection, a 2010 ABCA 2nd-team All-Midwest Region selection and he made the 2010 NCAA Fort Worth Regional All-Tournament Team. His pitching helped lead TCU to the College World Series. Maxwell was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round of the 2010 draft but elected to return to TCU for his senior season. Injuries shortened Maxwell's senior campaign but the right-hander still went 5-1 with a 3.13 ERA in 11 starts. He was named to the All-Mountain West 2nd Team at the end of the season. Maxwell finished his collegiate career with a 21-5 record and a 3.43 ERA. He was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 37th round of the 2011 draft.

Erroneous!

The Slammers have surrendered the most unearned runs in the league (16) while committing the third most errors (9).

Out of control.

The Slammers pitching staff has walked 30 batters so far on the season, most in the league.

Four games under .500.

The Slammers currently sit at four games under the .500 mark. In 2011 the most they were ever under .500 was two games.

Trying to stop the streak.

The Slammers currently are on a four-game losing streak. Joliet lost four in a row only once (8/16-8/19) in 2011 and did not lose five in a row last season.

Movin' on up!

RHP Gaby Hernandez became the fourth Slammers player to move on to affiliated baseball when his contract was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday. He joins LHP Aaron Dott, Joliet native RHP Ryan Quigley and Darien native RHP Chris Pack as former Slammers in MLB organizations.

Successful six.

Catcher Ben Hewett is the only Slammers player to hit safely in all six games the team has played. He is hitting .438 with four walks and two RBI.
