Warriors Win Streak Snapped with One-Goal Loss to Hurricanes
February 10, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
For the first time in almost a month, the Moose Jaw Warriors have tasted defeat.
The Warriors dropped a 2-1 game to the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday night, snapping the team's eight-game winning streak.
"We took too long to get to our game," Warriors head coach Mark O'Leary said after the game.
"We ran into a team that plays similar to us when we're playing well, they compete hard, they make it really difficult to get inside ice and in the early going, they were beating us in those one-on-one competitions to either get pucks or get space."
After a slow start to the first period, the Warriors actually took a 1-0 lead heading into the break after Captain Daemon Hunt buried a rebound in front for his 12th of the season with 1:18 left in the first.
The goal moved Hunt into a tie for first place in the Western Hockey League for goals among defencemen.
Moose Jaw wasn't able to carry the momentum from that goal into the second period, however, as penalty trouble cost the team early in the middle frame.
Yegor Klavdiev scored a power play goal just 2:21 into the second to tie the game and then he set up Ty Nash for another power play goal only 3:13 later.
Nash's goal held up as the game-winner despite the Warriors putting a ton of pressure on the Hurricanes in the third period.
"I thought the third period was us and it showed, we just didn't capitalize," O'Leary said.
"I would never question our effort and as the game got on, we got better, we pride ourselves on being a team that doesn't stop, we don't quit regardless of the circumstances and we saw that tonight, we just need to get there a whole lot quicker."
O'Leary said the Warriors' need to clean up their puck management in the first 40 minutes.
"Whether it was leaving our zone, trying to get a little bit too cute and certainly entering their zone, we were forcing things that weren't there," he said. "We weren't willing to put pucks in behind their d-men and go to work and I thought in the third period, we did exactly that."
Moose Jaw product Bryan Thomson made 33 saves, including 20 in the third period, to pick up the victory for the Hurricanes. Carl Tetachuk turned away 21 shots to lose to his hometown team.
Special teams cost the Warriors in the loss as Lethbridge finished the night 2-for-4 on the power play, while Moose Jaw went 0-for-5 on the man advantage, which included a four-minute power play in the third and penalty shot in the second.
The Warriors will look to bounce back with two weekend games on home ice as they host Prince Albert on Friday and Lethbridge on Saturday.
