Gauthier Breaks Franchise Record in Shutout Victory on Wednesday Night
February 10, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - A total of 14 different Winterhawks skaters recorded a point and Taylor Gauthier (GO-chee-yay) etched his name in Portland's history books during a 9-0 thumping of the Spokane Chiefs at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday night.
By not allowing a goal for the first 2:39 of tonight's contest, Gauthier now holds the longest shutout (minutes) streak in Club history, breaking Brendan Burke's previous record of 174:57, set during the 2013-14 season. And by not allowing a goal at any point in the game, Gauthier picked up his third consecutive shutout and continues his streak to his next start. He's now closing in on WHL history, 32:55 shy of the league's all-time record for longest shutout streak.
After surviving an early Spokane power play, the Winterhawks got right to work and left no doubt in the result of this game. James Stefan opened the scoring with a goal at 2:55 of the opening frame, scoring for the fourth game in a row.
Marcus Nguyen followed with a goal eight minutes later to stretch his own scoring streak to four games, followed shortly after by Josh Mori's first WHL goal at 10:37 to make it 3-0 Portland. Closing out the first period, Clay Hanus struck to push his point streak to 10 games - tying the longest such streak by a Winterhawk this season - and Jaydon Dureau tallied for a second consecutive outing against Spokane to wrap up a 5-0 Hawks lead through 20 minutes.
Portland continued its onslaught in the second period with goals from Luke Schelter, Kyle Chyzowski and two from Tyson Kozak. Schelter's seventh of the year came at 7:17, before Kozak posted back-to-back goals at 10:32 and 15:08. Chyzowski capped things off with a goal at 17:15, marking his fifth consecutive game with a goal.
Gauthier continued to shut things down in the third as both teams played out the final 20 minutes with no goals scored. Portland and Spokane continue their series of games in Spokane on Friday and Saturday.
