Spokane Chiefs News Release

Portland, Ore. - The Spokane Chiefs couldn't keep up with the red-hot Portland Winterhawks on Wednesday night, falling 9-0 on the road.

The Winterhawks wasted no time in getting the ball rolling, scoring their first goal of the game at 2:55 in the first period off a shot from James Stefan (his 24th goal of the year).

Portland really heated up in the second half of the opening frame, tacking on four more unanswered goals from Marcus Nguyen (10:37), Josh Mori (11:51), Clay Hanus (12:09) and Jaydon Dureau (16:19) to take a 5-0 lead going into the first break.

The Winterhawks kept things going in the second period with a goal from rookie Luke Schelter at 7:17, followed by a power play goal from Tyson Kozak at 10:32 to make it 7-0.

Cooper Michaluk, the newest Chief, came in to replace Manny Panghli in net just over halfway through the second period. He turned aside 5-of-7 shots faced, but Kozak was able to break through at 15:08. Kyle Chyzowski capitalized on another power play in the last three minutes of the period to net Portland's ninth and final goal of the game.

Panghli returned to the crease in the third period and was a wall, shutting down all 17 Portland shots and making a few spectacular saves. Overall, Panghli stopped 42-of-49 shots on net in 50:32 played.

Spokane was outshot 56-19 and went 0-for-4 on the power play and 7-for-9 on the penalty kill.

Up next, the Chiefs head back to Spokane to host the same Portland Winterhawks twice more this weekend, first on Friday at 7:05 p.m. It's Special Olympics Night - join us as we recognize athletes from Special Olympics Washington throughout the game!
