Warriors Using Lethbridge Loss as Learning Experience

February 10, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

The Moose Jaw Warriors are clearing their mind quickly of their one-goal loss to the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday.

The loss snapped the team's eight-game losing streak.

While the team started slow, the Warriors generated a number of scoring chances in the third period. Head coach Mark O'Leary said that's where the team's focus is going into the weekend.

"We did some good things to finish that game, I certainly thought we had enough scoring chances to tie and even win the game, but Lethbridge did a heck of a job for a full 60," he said.

"We had some honest video after the game and looked at some things that we can certainly do better and we'll learn from it."

The Warriors will get a shot at restarting a win streak when they host the Prince Albert Raiders and Calgary Hitmen this weekend to wrap up their three-game homestand.

Goalie Carl Tetachuk said the Warriors know they can bounce back right away.

"It was a tough one for sure, losing to Lethbridge, they played a good game, but we can learn from that loss and do better moving forward," he said.

"We need 60 minutes, a full team game. Prince Albert is a team like Lethbridge, they just grind you down, so we have to play a full 60."

Tetachuk currently leads the Western Hockey League with 1,150 saves and 2,081 minutes played, his 20 wins are tied for third and he's 10th with a 0.910 save percentage.

The 20-year-old netminder said he's relishing his role with the Warriors as the team's backbone.

"As the season goes on my confidence builds up and just preparing for playoffs is what I'm thinking right now, every game matters, so I've got to be at my best," he said.

"I like being the rock back there, holding this team together, keeping them in games."

The Warriors remain in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, but Saskatoon gained two points on Moose Jaw on Wednesday thanks to their 4-2 win over Calgary.

O'Leary said the loss adds more hunger to the Warriors.

"We'll try to use it that way," he said. "Complacency, you're fighting against that all the time, it's human nature... it was a wake up call against Lethbridge."

The Warriors are 2-1 against the Raiders this season, however, the two sides haven't played since Moose Jaw's 4-1 win in Prince Albert on Nov. 24.

"The big challenge is to manage pucks leaving our zone and entering PA's zone," O'Leary said. "If we do that, we're going to give ourselves a chance."

The Warriors and Raiders face-off at 7 p.m. on Friday night. Moose Jaw and Calgary battle on Saturday night at Mosaic Place.

Tickets are available for both games at mjwarriors.ca or the Mosaic Place Box Office.
