Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Moose Jaw, SK - On a night when the organization was celebrating its past, the Moose Jaw Warriors will be looking to put Friday's game in the past as quickly as possible.

The Warriors dropped a 7-1 game to the Winnipeg ICE on Conexus Warriors & Legends Hall of Fame night at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.

"Hockey is game of small, fine details and if they're not sharp, they're not good against good teams, that can expose you," Warriors assistant coach Scott King said.

The Warriors came out of the gates firing, but missed on a couple of close chances early.

"We had a couple of close calls early, maybe get one in the first few minutes and maybe that chances the look of the game a little bit, but Winnipeg is a pretty opportunistic team," King said.

While the Warriors had some opportunities early, Forward Josh Hoekstra said Moose Jaw didn't do enough to sustain that.

"It's pretty much unacceptable, we didn't play how we wanted to," he said. "[Head coach Mark] O'Leary was letting us know before we had to be quick, first on pucks and hard on pucks, and right from that first period, Winnipeg was beating us to everything."

Winnipeg struck for five goals in the first period as Jonas Woo and Vladislav Shilo scored just 31 second apart to open the scoring. Owen Pederson, Carson Lambos and Carson Latimer added goals later in the frame.

The ICE also picked up a pair of goals from Matthew Savoie and Ben Zloty in the second period to take a 7-0 lead after two.

The Warriors were able to break up the shutout late in the third period with a power play goal from Brayden Yager, his 23rd of the season.

"It's obviously tough, we've played better against them earlier in the year, we've defended against it and we just need to be better and play to the game plan," Hoekstra said.

Warriors goalie Jackson Unger made 10 saves on 14 shots before being replaced by Justen Maric with just under five minutes to play in the first period. Maric stopped 14 of 17 shots the rest of the way.

Moose Jaw was outshot, 31-22, on the night.

The Warriors had a strong showing the penalty kill, finishing 3-for-3, including killing off a five-minute major in the third period. Moose Jaw's power play went 1-for-2 in the loss.

The Warriors are back on the ice coming up on Saturday when they travel to Prince Albert to face-off with the Raiders. Puck drops at 7 p.m.

The next home action is a key Eastern Conference playoff matchup against Lethbridge on Tuesday. It's also the final Two-For-Tuesday of the season, click here to purchase tickets.
