NEWS & NOTES:
Last Game: The Wheat Kings were unable to hit the elusive .500 mark after suffering a 7-5 loss to the Swift Current Broncos Tuesday night. It was a see-saw battle between the two clubs who each gave up leads but in the end it was the Broncos who had the last laugh scoring four 3rd period goals to comeback and pick up the win. For the Wheat Kings Brett Hyland earned 2nd star after picking up a pair of goals, Nate Danielson & Calder Anderson each picked up 3 points in the loss.
Feb 17th VS Lethbridge Hurricanes : The Wheat Kings and Hurricanes meet for the 4th and final time this season. The last two games these two clubs met was in Brandon where the Hurricanes won both games respectively 4-3 and 6-4. It was Tyson LaVenture who was the difference scoring 5 goals in the two games combined for the Hurricanes earning 1st stars honours in back to back games. This would be the final two games coached by Don MacGillvray who was replaced the following Monday morning by Marty Murray. Since that weekend the Wheat Kings have had a winning record of 13-8-5 and are currently sitting 4 points out of a playoff spot with games in hand. The Wheat Kings are 1-2 versus the Hurricanes this season with their 1 victory being inside the Enmax Centre back in October by a score of 2-1. Carson Bjarnason was named first star after stopping 32 of 33 shots.
The Man: Kelly McCrimmon, former Head Coach, General Manager, Governor and Owner of the Brandon Wheat Kings, was named this year's recipient of the WHL Governors Award last Monday. The WHL Governors Award is the highest honour the WHL bestows on an individual who has been associated with the League. The WHL Governors Award is presented annually to an individual who, through their outstanding hockey and overall contributions to the game, has impacted on the growth and development of the WHL. In total, McCrimmon spent 27 seasons as the General Manager of the Wheat Kings with 13 of those campaigns in a dual role as both General Manager and Head Coach. McCrimmon became a part owner of the Wheat Kings in 1992-93, purchasing one third of the shares from then majority owner Bob Cornell. Come 2000-01, McCrimmon and his family became the sole owners of the Wheat Kings, purchasing the remaining shares of the franchise from Cornell.
Who's Hot: Brett Hyland currently has 19 goals scored in his last 21 games. Forward Nate Danielson has been stellar as of late scoring 48 points in his last 32 games. Nolan Ritchie has 39 points in his last 30 games.
