Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
The Moose Jaw Warriors picked up their 30th win of the season in style on Friday night.
The Warriors scored early and often, picking up four first-period goals, on their way to a 7-0 win over the Swift Current Broncos at Mosaic Place.
"I'm really proud," Warriors captain Daemon Hunt said on the team hitting the 30-win milestone. "Everybody's been playing great and we played really good tonight."
Hunt put together a career-night, picking up two goals and five points to lead the Warriors to the win.
"I was just really feeling myself tonight, everybody has one of those games throughout your career," Hunt said after posting a career-high in points. "I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates to, they really fed me the puck."
Atley Calvert kicked off the night for the Warriors with his 12th goal of the season just 5:24 into the game. He added another goal late in the second period and finished with four points in the win.
"Sometimes it takes the first goal to kind of loosen up and get going, but once we scored that one, it opened up for us," Warriors assistant coach Gord Burnett said after the win.
Denton Mateychuk also added a goal and three points, while Eric Alarie finished with a goal and two points. Jagger Firkus and Ryder Korczak had two assists each in the win.
After Calvert opened the scoring, Robert Baco added his 10th of the season just past the midway point to make it 2-0 for the Warriors.
Less than two minutes later, Hunt fired in a one-timer for his first of the night.
With just over two minutes left in the first, Alarie picked up his 14th of the season to finish off the 4-0 opening frame for the Warriors.
Moose Jaw continued to apply the pressure in the second period, but Isaac Poulter made some big saves to keep the Warriors off the board.
Calvert finally broke through for his second of the game, and 13th of the season, with 2:25 left in the second to make it a 5-0 lead for Moose Jaw.
Hunt picked up his second of the night 6:49 into the third period and Mateychuk scored his ninth of the season, snapping a 12-game goal drought, to finish off the big night for the Warriors.
While the offence did a lot of the work for Moose Jaw, Carl Tetachuk came up big when needed, making 25 saves for his second shutout of the season and first on home ice.
"He gives the whole team confidence," Hunt said. "He made some really big saves tonight actually, early on when the score was 0-0 that could have been a game changer.
The Warriors outshot the Broncos, 49-25, in the win.
Moose Jaw was 1-for-5 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill on the night.
With the win, the Warriors keep their hold on fourth place in the Eastern Conference, six points ahead of the Saskatoon Blades, who is the next opponent for Moose Jaw.
The Warriors will travel to Saskatoon on Sunday afternoon for a key matchup against the Blades. Puck drops at 4 p.m. at SaskTel Centre.
