Spokane, Wash. - A four-goal third period propelled the Spokane Chiefs to a 5-3 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds at Spokane Arena on Friday night. Team captain and Washington Capitals prospect Bear Hughes led the way with two goals and an assist.
After a scoreless first period, the Thunderbirds lit the lamp to take a 1-0 lead at 5:05 of the second when Conner Roulette picked up his 17th of the season.
The Chiefs tied it up at 11:54 when defenseman Raegan Wiles took advantage of a scrum in front to chip the puck into a wide-open net for an unassisted power play goal.
Seattle took the lead once more at 13:47, scoring on a power play of their own when Reid Schaefer picked the right corner with a perfect point shot through traffic.
Spokane found their footing in the third, outshooting Seattle 15-9 to take the lead and secure the win. Chase Bertholet ripped home his 18th of the season after a faceoff win by Hughes to make it 2-2 and 8:26.
Hughes then scored his first of the night at 14:04, weaving through the Seattle defense before lasering the puck past goalie Scott Ratzlaff to take the lead.
Forward Carter Streek added to the lead with the eventual game-winner, capitalizing on a perfect backdoor feed from Ty Cheveldayoff to make it 4-2 at 16:29. Hughes picked up his second on an empty net at 18:53 and Seattle's Jeremy Hanzal scored a late goal to reach the final 5-3 tally.
Spokane finished the game 1-f0r-4 on the power play and 0-for-2 on the penalty kill. Shots on goal favored the Thunderbirds, 32-28.
