January 26, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
The Moose Jaw Warriors fought back from a three-goal deficit to get close to the Winnipeg ICE but they were not able to complete the comeback and narrowly lost 5-4 at Wayne Fleming Arena.
Despite playing their third game of the weekend and their fourth in the last five days, the Warriors came out hard and fast as they raced up the ice to create several scoring chances.
Unfortunately, in the first period, the Warriors were burned by special teams.
With under seven minutes left in the period and with Winnipeg working on the man advantage, the ICE slung the puck around the Moose Jaw zone and set up Peyton Krebs inside the right circle where he scored on a one-timer.
Moose Jaw responded under two minutes later when rookie Eric Alarie fought his away across the Winnipeg left line.ÃÂ The 16-year-old went around one ICE defender and then setup Logan Doust on the right-wing where he scored his fifth of the season.
Inside the final three minutes left in the period, the ICE went back on the power-play and again the puck found Peyton Krebs on the right side of the Moose Jaw net where he scored to give Winnipeg a 2-1 lead.
Five minutes into the second period, former Red Deer Rebels Captain Dawson Barteaux let slapshot go from the right blue line that beat Brock Gould to give Winnipeg a two-goal lead.
Moose Jaw fought back six minutes later.
Ryder Korczak took a shot from the right circle that went wide of the net.ÃÂ The puck bounced off the end boards and then over the Winnipeg net, hitting Cade Hayes who was credited with his fourth goal of the season.
With four and a half minutes left in the period, the Warriors were given a four-minute power-play when ICE forward Michal Teply got a double-minor for high-sticking.
During the man-advantage, the Warriors were not able to convert, instead, Winnipeg scored a shorthanded goal and then added another goal inside the final minute of the period to take a 5-2 lead.
Moose Jaw did not quit and get battling throughout the third period.
Approaching the nine-minute mark of the period, Garrett Wright tossed the puck up the ice from the Moose Jaw zone.
Warriors rookie Kade Runke battled with Peyton Krebs down the left Winnipeg boards and towards the goal line.
As Runke got control of the puck and cut towards the net, he was hauled down from behind by Krebs but he was able to knock the puck over the goal line for his first WHL goal.
In the final three minutes of regulation, the Warriors pulled their goalie for an extra attacker.
Ryder Korczak had the puck along the right Winnipeg boards and made a cross-ice pass to Tate Popple at the left point.ÃÂ The 19-year-old skated to the top of the left circle and then ripped a shot that beat the ICE goalie to pull Moose Jaw to within one.
Moose Jaw had their moments in the final seconds but they were not able to score an equalizer and fell 5-4.
The Warriors are now off until next weekend when they return to Mosaic Place for a pair of games, Friday the Saskatoon Blades are in town and then on Saturday, Brayden Tracey, Adam Evanoff, and the Victoria Royals make their only visit of the season to Moose Jaw.
