ICE Edge Warriors 5-4 in Sunday Night Showdown
January 26, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release
The Moose Jaw Warriors were in town for their first visit to Wayne Fleming Arena, after losing 6-3 last night at home against the Swift Current Broncos. The ICE were coming off of an impressive 5-2 win over the Victoria Royals last night in Winnipeg.
It was a busy first period with the ICE taking a 2-1 lead into the break. Winnipeg opened the scoring at 12:47 with Peyton Krebs' eighth goal of the season, but the Warriors would respond less than two minutes later as Logan Doust tied the game up. Krebs would score his second of the period at 16:44 to put the ICE up as the teams headed to the locker room.
Both teams continued to put pucks in the net in the second period, with Winnipeg's Dawson Barteaux quickly putting the ICE up by a pair, before the Warriors pulled within one after Cade Hayes had a puck deflect off his shoulder and in. The ICE would get two more goals in the frame, with Cole Muir scoring a shorthanded goal before Michal Teply put one home to end the period. Shots were 26-15 in favor of the ICE, as they took a 5-2 lead into the second intermission.
The Warriors didn't back down though as they would get to within one goal of the ICE in the final frame. Kade Runke scored halfway through the third to trim the deficit to two. Tate Popple gave the ICE a scare as he buried his sixth of the season with two minutes left to make it 5-4 in favor of the ICE. The Warriors would pull their goalie but the tying goal would not be found. ICE out shot Moose Jaw 38-20 as Jesse Makaj got the win for Winnipeg.
The ICE are on the road for three games against Calgary, Red Deer, and Edmonton. They'll be back home for a Wednesday night rematch with Moose Jaw on February 5th.
