Spokane Chiefs News Release

Kennewick, Washington - The Spokane Chiefs turned in a dominant showing Saturday night as they visited the Tri-City Americans and came away with a 7-2 win. The Chiefs' offensive outpouring was fueled by a four point effort from Luke Toporowski and a pair of goals by overage forward Leif Mattson.

After successfully killing off a Tri-City penalty earlier in the frame, Spokane converted their first power play chance of the game with a Brad Ginnell goal at 16:54. The Americans managed to tie things with just 1.1 seconds left on the clock as Jayden Platz connected to make it 1-1. The Chiefs dominated the shots on goal throughout the duration of the opening period, leading 20-5 at the break.

An action-packed second period that featured four combined scores in just over two minutes left the Chiefs holding a 4-2 lead that held for the remainder of the frame. With the Americans on the power play, Mattson found the net at 3:25 and was followed by a Toporowski marker at 4:05 that gave Spokane two short-handed goals on the same Tri-City power play. After Sasha Mutala cut the lead to 3-2, Mattson added a second score on the night--this one coming on a Chiefs power play--at 5:38.

Spokane entered the third period looking to add on, and Michael King did just that 3:13 in, giving the team their first even strength goal of the night. Bear Hughes got in on the action at 8:47 when a Ty Smith shot on net deflected off Hughes and home to make it 6-2. The Chiefs' final score of the night came at 12:59 when rookie forward Owen MacNeil notched his first career WHL goal, punctuating Spokane's 7-2 victory over the rival Tri-City Americans.

James Porter Jr. received the start in net for Spokane and was 17-of-19 between the pipes. Tri-City tabbed Ronin Geraghty for duty and he ended the night 41-of-48. The Chiefs were a perfect 3-for-3 on the power play while the Americans went 0-f0r-2.
