Warriors Drop Hard Fought Game against WHL-Leading ICE

For the first time since Nov. 20, the Moose Jaw Warriors lost a game in regulation on home ice.

The Warriors lost 5-1 to the Western Hockey League-leading Winnipeg ICE on Saturday night at Mosaic Place, snapping a five-game point streak for Moose Jaw.

"It was hard in the first period and then we got loose in the second and when you get loose against that team, they fill the net," Warriors forward Atley Calvert said after the loss.

Warriors assistant coach Scott King said the Warriors started strong, but couldn't keep up with the ICE as the game went on.

"Obviously, there's a lot of skill in that lineup and they're going to make you pay when they get their chances," he said.

"Their transition game is fantastic, best in the league, if you're not real smart with the puck and you don't get it all the way in, they're coming the other way."

The Warriors started strong when Calvert opened the scoring, banging in a loose puck in front of the net for his fifth of the season to give Moose Jaw the lead 9:03 into the game.

Winnipeg found momentum as the first period went on and eventually capitalized when Carson Lambos ripped home a point shot with 2:05 left in the frame.

The ICE struck quickly to start the second period when Matthew Savoie scored just 35 seconds into the period.

That got Winnipeg going and they would score three more times in the frame with Skyler Bruce, Jakin Smallwood and Lambos getting his second to make it 5-1 after two.

The two teams battled back-and-forth in the third period with Jackson Unger coming in to replace Carl Tetachuk in the Warriors' net and making 18 saves.

Tetachuk stopped 26 of 31 shots in the first two periods.

The ICE outshot the Warriors, 49-26, in the game.

Moose Jaw was 0-for-1 on the power play, while Winnipeg went 0-for-2 on the man advantage. All three power plays came in the first period.

The Warriors will now finish off their three-in-three with a road trip into Regina on Sunday to take on the Pats. Puck drops at 4 p.m.

Moose Jaw returns to home ice on Wednesday when they face off with the Calgary Hitmen at Mosaic Place.
