Prince Albert Raiders News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Prince Albert Raiders (14-18-1-1) fell 4-1 to the Calgary Hitmen (14-12-3-2) at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday afternoon.
Zachary Wilson scored the lone Raiders' goal in the loss for his first marker in the WHL.
The Raiders had control of the puck for most of the first period. One of their better chances came when Brayden Peters tried to play the puck behind the net. The puck got away from the Hitmen's netminder and Evan Herman picked it up. He put a quick shot on goal, but Peters was able to scramble back in time to make the save.
With 4:50 to play in the opening frame, the Raiders got on the board. Niall Crocker carried the puck into the zone and round the net, centering a pass for Hayden Pakkala. The Okotoks, Alta. product put a shot on goal that was stopped by Peters. Wilson was able to find the rebound and bury it to put the Raiders up 1-0.
The Hitmen tied the game 7:35 into the middle frame. Carter Yakemchuk made a cross-zone pass to Sean Tschigerl, who fired a quick shot that beat Tikhon Chaika to make it 1-1.
About a minute later, Calgary took the lead after a turnover in the Raiders end. Riley Fiddler-Schultz corralled the loose puck in the slot and his shot got past Chaika to give the Hitmen a 2-1 advantage at the 8:38 mark.
With 7:13 to play in the period, Calgary added to their lead on the power play. Grayden Sieppman's shot from the point was deflected in front by Tschigerl and through Chaika to put Calgary up 3-1.
Sloan Stanick nearly brought the Raiders back within one on a power play chance. He had the puck behind Peters in goal, but slid the puck through the crease and wide of the goal.
In the third, the Raiders ran into penalty trouble while searching for the next goal. The Hitmen took advantage of their final power play. Blake Stevenson's centering pass went off a Raider in front of the goal and past Chaika to make it a 4-1 game with 6:24 to play.
The Raiders had a late power play to get back into the game, but were unable to solve Peters. Both Landon Kosior and Reece Vitelli had chances to get on the board before being denied by the Hitmen's netminder.
Chaika finished the game with 29 saves in the loss for the Raiders. Peters made 26 saves for the Hitmen.
The Raiders head to Red Deer for a matchup against the Rebels on Monday night at the Peavey Mart Centrium. Game time is 8 p.m. Catch the game on WHL Live on CHL TV, or head to Original Joe's or The Rock And Iron Club House to watch.
